Safe Opening & Combination Change
The new manager took over the shop last month and only now needs the back-office safe open, but the combination the previous owner was supposed to leave in writing never turned up anywhere in the handover file.
In plain words
Safe opening favours the gentlest method that fits the particular safe and lock, with drilling kept as a later option rather than a first resort. Manipulation and decoding are tried first for a mechanical dial, and a manufacturer reset or override path where one exists for an electronic keypad. Where those routes are unavailable or exhausted, drilling enters the conversation, aimed at a point the maker's own service literature marks as reachable and repairable. Most safes that still have their original lock in reasonable condition never reach that last rung at all.
How the visit goesDecades of daily use have left the law firm's old dial safe drifting: the numbers line up close to where they should, never quite enough to drop the bolt.

How the visit goes

Records, plates and security ratings
A safe's data plate, when it survives, often carries more than a model number: many list a UL security classification for the lock itself, information that tells the locksmith what level of manipulation resistance to expect and what tools the job calls for. Any paperwork the owner still has, a purchase receipt, a service record from a previous visit, or a manual tucked in a drawer, adds detail that speeds up identification. Where none of that survives, the locksmith builds the same picture by reading the hardware directly, just with a few extra minutes spent confirming what the plate would otherwise have said.
Repairing or replacing the lock afterward
Once the safe is open, the lock that caused the trouble gets its own decision. A worn or damaged mechanical lock can often be repaired in place, its wheel pack, drive cam or spindle replaced individually rather than swapping the whole assembly. A failed electronic lock is more often replaced outright with a comparable or higher-rated unit, since circuit boards and keypads are not field-serviceable like a wheel pack. Either path aims for a lock at least as capable as the one it replaces, matched to the case's existing cutout, though restoring the safe's overall rated protection after any field repair follows the manufacturer's approved method rather than being assumed automatic.
A combination that belongs to the current owner
Every old credential the lock supports, past user and manager codes, any super-master or recovery code, keys and external access, is checked and removed rather than just the one combination in daily use, so nobody still holding an old way in, a departed employee, a previous owner or otherwise, keeps one. The new sequence is chosen by the current owner or manager on the spot, not assigned from a list. This is worth treating deliberately rather than casually: deciding who genuinely needs the combination, and keeping that group as small as the business actually requires, is the simplest way to keep a fresh reset from becoming next year's same problem.

What affects the quote
Whether drilling turns out to be necessary
Manipulation, decoding and manufacturer reset paths are tried first; drilling, a repair plug and any replacement lock only enter the picture once those routes are exhausted.
Damage from a prior break-in attempt
Pry marks, drill attempts or a tripped relocker from an earlier incident mean assessing and repairing that damage in addition to the combination work the visit was booked for.
Contents that affect how carefully the opening proceeds
Cash, business records, prescription logs or firearms each carry their own handling expectations once the door opens, which can shape how the visit is planned and quoted.
What to have ready
- Do you own the safe, or manage it for someone else?
- Has the safe ever been drilled or serviced before?
- Has the safe been through a fire, flood or break-in attempt?
Safe Opening & Combination Change: questions
QuestionsCan several employees each get their own code once the safe is open?
Many electronic locks support more than one user code, so a manager and one or more backup employees can each be set up separately during the same visit rather than sharing a single combination. A mechanical dial only holds one combination at a time, so multiple access there means agreeing who holds it and how that changes when staff do.
Can the same visit both open the safe and service it?
Yes. Once the safe is open, the lock is inspected for wear, corrosion or damage, repaired or replaced if needed, and reset to a new combination in the same visit. Any bolt work or handle issue found along the way is addressed at the same time rather than requiring a separate appointment.
How often should a safe combination be changed?
There is no fixed schedule; the sensible trigger is a change in who knows it, such as an employee or manager leaving, rather than a set number of months or years. A combination that has only ever been known to current staff generally does not need changing on a routine basis, since the lock itself does not wear out from correct use the way a mechanical part might.
